A few weeks ago when we stayed at Keswick Lodge Retreat, we spent our Saturday at Oxley’s Day Spa, which was about a 20-minute drive away from where we were staying and was a birthday treat from my other half.
Until we got there, I really didn’t know what to expect from a day spa, having only ever been to spas in hotels or for an overnight stay, but from the moment we got there until the moment we left, I loved every second of it.
The drive there was pretty easy, but it is up at the top of quite a steep hill, so make sure whoever is driving has some good clutch control! Once you arrive, you realise how secluded the place is (including having no phone signal) but it is so peaceful and just what we needed for a relaxing day. The spa is open from 9am – 5:30pm on the weekend and until 7:30pm on weekdays.
We were greeted by the lovely reception staff and shown upstairs for a cup of tea and to give our lunch order. The package we had, also meant that I got a manicure or pedicure too, so I booked this in whilst we were up there. The lunch menu was quite extensive, with things on it like salmon, salads and jacket potatoes, as well as dreamy desserts. We were shown back downstairs to pick up our towels, robes and slippers and went to get changed.
The changing rooms were very roomy, but I was the only one in there as we got there just after 9. I met Jordan in the pool area which had a huge swimming pool, as well as a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room – so we headed straight for the jacuzzi as we were the only ones in there.
After about an hour of relaxing and reading by the pool, I decided to head up to the gym before getting my pedicure. The gym had a few different machines and a weights area and was fully equipped for a quick workout. When I finished, it was almost time for my treatment, so I quickly showered and got changed and met my lovely pedicurist (I usually would get my fingers done, but I already had gels on) and chose a nude pink for my toes. We chatted for the full half an hour about everything and the time flew by.
By the time my nails were dry, it was time for lunch so we headed upstairs. In the package that we got, a two-course lunch was included so we decided to get one starter, two mains and a dessert to share. For the starter, we had a smoked salmon and prawn salad, which was delicious, and the portion was definitely enough for two people. When the main came, I couldn’t believe the size of the piece of salmon I had, it was huge! It also came with new potatoes and a salad, which was all amazing. Jordan went for a cheese and chutney wrap with wedges, which also looked great.
We couldn’t decide about the dessert for ages as they all sounded amazing, but if the Lake District is famous for one thing, it’s sticky toffee pudding, so we went for that. I’m always a fan of this dessert, and if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that it’s always something I chose!
After lunch, we definitely needed a lie-down and went back to the pool to do so – I think I even fell asleep for a bit! We made the most of the facilities and the downtime before heading into Keswick in the late afternoon, which was only a 10-minute drive away.
If you are in the area, or just want to get away for the day, then I would definitely recommend giving this place a go and it was very reasonably priced too. For access to the day spa, plus lunch and a treatment, it is £65 each, but if one of you does not want a treatment, then the price is £95 for the two of you which I think is really good for the facilities and the amount of food you get as well. My pedicure has also lasted over a month!
Have you been to a day spa before? What did you think?
