Well this sure does feel weird… the irony of writing a post when you don’t know what to write as well is palpable.
It’s been a fair few weeks, months, since I’ve sat down at my laptop and written anything that isn’t work-related, and in all honesty, I wish there was a reason why, but I just haven’t had the inspiration to blog.
Last year I was so passionate about this little space on the internet, but, as I’m sure some of my friends in this online world would agree, the blogging world and community aren’t what it used to be, and quite frankly, I’m happier on the outside. There is a lot of negativity with content creating in general, and I’d rather focus my energy into something that brings me joy and doesn’t zap it day to day.
Writing has always been my passion – from being part of my university newspaper to having my first paid publication and now doing it every day in a job that I love, I have always been surrounded by words, creativity and a zest to get my thoughts onto the page… so where has that dedication to this blog gone?
The short answer? I have absolutely no idea.
2019 has been a crazy year. I started it off going through one of the worst bouts of mental health I’ve ever faced (something that I’m sure I’ll talk about when the time is right) to the happiest day of my life getting married to my best friend, to seeing friends tie the knot, get engaged, have babies, get new jobs and I even managed to travel to some new and beautiful places; but when it came to talking about any of that right here on the internet, my fingers just didn’t want to type the words.
And guess what, the world still turns whether I write or not.
I’ve been through periods before where I haven’t wanted to write anything, but this is the longest I’ve been without updating my blog, pretty much since I started it all those years ago, and I really did think I’d care about that more, but in all honesty, I’ve enjoyed living in the moment, not having to worry about scheduling tweets, write Instagram captions, whether my words are SEO optimised and all that other stuff that comes with blogging in general, and it’s been great.
My best friend once said to me, ‘we’re programmed to work 8 hours a day, commute, go to the gym, be sociable, read books, see family, network, update social media, get enough sleep, clean our houses, meditate and the rest,’ and it’s exhausting – now put thinking of ideas, writing posts, taking photos, editing, scheduling etc. into the mix, and for me it’s a recipe for disaster.
Don’t get me wrong, I know people who do all of the above and more, and do it well, and still have the time and energy to update their blog regularly, and I applaud you, I really do.
I really don’t know what is going to happen with this blog going forward: If you read one of my last posts, I was convinced that I wanted to do more wedding-related content, and use this solely for travel and lifestyle pieces, but that idea has gone out of the window too. I’m not saying either way that I’m giving it up, or keeping on top of everything, and if you looked at my drafts you’d have a giggle I’m sure, but for now, I don’t want the pressure that I so easily can put on myself when it comes to creating content regularly – I get that enough day to day as it is!
I have so many posts which I’ve started over the past few months that haven’t come into fruition, but I’m hoping one day to get them all written as I really do think travel guides can be helpful to people visiting a new place, and they are always something I seek on the internet from someone similar to me.
So what does the future hold?
Well… at this point, I have absolutely no idea. I really do love writing, and my passion for it isn’t going anywhere any time soon, but when it comes to doing it for personal benefit, I don’t think I’m there just yet. I’m hoping that a rush of energy will one day flood my entire being and I’ll type and type and type to my heart’s consent – watch this space I guess!
